On 1 November 2007 the UK's Foreign & Commonwealth Office will introduce the Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS). ATAS will make it compulsory for all non-EEA or Swiss nationals studying postgraduate courses in scientific and technical subjects to apply for security clearance before they apply for entry clearance (a visa) to enter the UK as a student. Students who are already in the UK and need to extend their stay in order to study one of the specified courses will also need to obtain clearance before applying to the Home Office for further leave to remain (a visa extension).

ATAS clearance applications are free are made online. Once clearance has been granted you will receive an ATAS certificate which you need to include with your further leave to remain application.

As I crossed Waterloo bridge this morning on my way to work, I anchored my gaze on the shoes of the woman in front of me. Mental blinders blocking out everything but her feet, I wondered what distracted her so that she plodded onward, oblivious to the bits of rubbish plastered by the wet wind to her shoes. Why does she not turn her feet so that the wind will snatch them away? Or scrape her feet along the pavement to rid herself of this unsightly burden?

As I pulled nearer to pass, my nearsighted eyes saw that these were not scraps of newspaper or newstand food wrappers, but once white bows, thickly tied and pasted off-kilter to her shoes' toes.
